Order up the filet mignon and some wine cause these two
authors will be hitting it off tonight (not in a sexual manner.) If Lakshmi
Chaudhry, author of “Men Growing Up to be Boys,” and Pat Archbold, author of
“The Death of Pretty,” were to come together and discuss their work and views
over a nice dinner, I’m confident that they would share a lot of the same
idealities. Chaudrys primary message is that times have changed for the worse, men
do not want to be men anymore and it is a product of what society and marketing
has done to us. Lots of men now a days don’t want to take up responsibilities
like finding a job or getting married because they are taught that
responsibility and stability is not fun. Chaudry is basically saying that men
are giving into what is now a societal norm. This message is very similar to
what Archbold addresses, except in the case for women. Archbold claims that
woman do not relish being “pretty” anymore because “pretty” requires innocence,
and no woman wants to be innocent and steady. Society is portraying that women
need to be “hot” and exotic, and in result women are changing their behaviors.
Both these authors make the point that both men and women are becoming products
of what our society wants them to be. They both agree that our society is
trying to keep people from maturing into an “old and boring adult.” These two
would love a good dinner discussion.
